Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park

A definite attraction for anyone interested in English Gardens, Mount Edgcumbe is a Tudor House with a country park comprising some 865 acres. Built in the middle of the 16th century, Mount Edgcumbe House was formerly the house of the Earls of Mount Edgcumbe. Damaged in the Civil War, Mount Edgcumbe House was gutted in WWII. Now restored with a predominantly 18th century interior, Mount Edgcumbe House contains Edgcumbe family treasures, Regency furniture, Plymouth Porcelain, 16th century tapestries and works by Sir Joshua Reynolds. Changing exhibitions are displayed in Mount Edgcumbe House (included in entry ticket).

Covering a peninsula, Mount Edgcumbe Park faces the Plymouth Sound and offers fantastic views to Plymouth from Rame Head and Penlee Point. Indeed, this park is the reason for visiting Mount Edgcumbe. Next to the house, you'll find the Earl's Garden with its ancient and rare trees, spectacular shell seat and Victorian East Lawn Terrace. In the lower park, you can visit the Formal Gardens laid out 200 years ago in French, Italian and English sections. Also worth your while are the new American Plantation, New Zealand Garden and the Jubilee Garden.

To get to Mount Edgcumbe House and Country Park, you can take a ferry from the Mayflower Steps in summer. If you want to make a day of it, Tamar Cruising offer combined tickets to Mount Edgcumbe and a River Tamar Cruise.
