Montrose Air Station Heritage CentreThe Montrose Air Station was the first operational military airfield in the UK. Set up in 1913 by the Royal Flying Corps, the heritage centre tells the story of this early period of manned flight. A major RFC/RAF base during WWI & II, Montrose was a training centre where thousands of young men learnt their flying skills before being sent into active combat. As a centre for advanced flying training in the early and dangerous days of flight, the Air Station at Montrose witnessed the last moments of many a young pilot and is now rumoured to be one of the most haunted places in Britain.Things you'll see on your visit to Montrose Air Station include some of the oldest hangars in the world as well as a fine collection of photographs, artefacts and memorabilia related to the Montrose airfield and the men and women who lent their services here between 1913 and 1950.
