One of the most significant historical buildings in Scotland, Dunnotar Castle is superbly sited. Surrounded by water on three sides and a steep ravine on the fourth, Dunnotar Castle was a formidable fortress to contend with.

For centuries Dunnotar Castle served as a stronghold and its walls have witnessed some turbulent events. In 1297, William Wallace set Dunnotar Castle on fire while the English garrison were trapped within its walls. In 1652, Dunnotar Castle was the site of yet another bloody siege when Cromwell's troops attempted to capture the Crown Jewels. Yet again in 1685, Dunnotar Castle witnessed more gruesome events when 167 Covenanters were imprisoned in an underground cellar. Those who tried to escape it walls were killed while most who remained within its depths slowly succumbed to starvation and disease. Those that survived Dunnotar Castle were later taken to the colonies.
