Dunnottar Castle was home to the Earls Marischal for over two hundred years. One of the most powerful families in Scotland, the Earls Marischal were counsellors to sovereign and their guestlist included the likes of Mary Queen of Scotland and her son King James VI of Scotland.

During the Civil War, the Royalist Marquess of Montrose beseiged Dunnottar Castle. Although Dunnottar Castle stood firm Stonehaven and its surrounding lands were burnt.
